Inland Valley WOmen’s Chorus

of Mendocino County

TO WOMEN WHO LOVE TO SING:

Here’s an opportunity to join a very welcoming group of singing women - the Inland Valley Women’s Chorus (IVWC).

New members are welcome!

No audition or prior experience required.

We meet Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:00pm

at the Center for Spiritual Living, 741 S. Oak Street

(located in back of Rite Aid, just north of Gobbi St., in Ukiah.)

We sing songs of peace, joy, social justice, and healing. Some of the songs are written by our members and friends, some are from around the world; some are simple chants, most have 3-part harmonies.

The chorus is directed by Madge Strong, who has decades of musical and teaching background.

The chorus has performed for many special occasions, such as Project Sanctuary’s “Walk in Her Shoes”, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Diversity Day, Women’s History, World AIDs Day and Earth Day events, Mendocino Local Women’s Music Festival, and we often give a concert in late Spring.

This season we’re also planning a northern California women’s choral invitational gathering.

Studies show that singing is good for our health and minds.  One chorus member said, “Even when I feel tired after work, I come away from chorus re-energized.” Music is also good for the world, teaching harmony and how to work and play together in community.

A little bit of Our Story:

IVWC was formed in Fall of 1993, originally led by Judy Fjell. Madge Strong has been directing the chorus since 1997.

Currently, we have over 30 members. We often have a concert in the spring and a winter solstice singalong. We also sing for special events such as World AIDs Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Earth Day and women's history events.

During the summer, we meet for potlucks and, of course, singing. Once or twice a year, we get together for a long weekend retreat in a beautiful spot in our county, usually on the coast.

Songs from our 20-year repertoire honor women, peace & justice, nature, healing & joy – from near and far – usually in 3-part harmonies.

Some of the songs we sing are written by our own members and friends, some are gathered from around the world. Many are by contemporary women composers such as Holly Near, Harmony Grisman, Judy Fjell, Betsy Rose, MaMuse, and Copper Wimmin, as well as originals by our own chorus members, including Madge Strong, Mary Buckley and Tina Rader. We also sing musical tributes to Pete Seeger and international folk songs.

We are a very welcoming group of women who love to sing together.

In 2016, we celebrated 22 years of glorious singing.
